Need to increase agri share in GDP to 50%: Agri Min
Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said there is a need to increase the share of farm sector in the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 50 per cent from the current 14 per cent and stressed on balanced use of fertilisers to protect soil health as well as boost crop yields. Tomar also urged farmers not to burn crop residues as it affects solid health and leads to air pollution. He asked them to take advantage of various Government programmes to deal with stubble burning. Addressing a conference for awareness of fertiliser application among farmers, Tomar said the share of agriculture in the country's GDP is currently 14 per cent, but this is not enough. “Can we increase this to 50 per cent of our GDP?” he added.

Climate change is poised to affect the world's food supply in three key ways, experts say."There will be impacts on the quantity, quality and location of the food we produce," said Dr. Sam Myers, a medical doctor and senior research scientist studying environmental health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Indian Agrochemical Industry
India is the fourth largest producer of agrochemicals globally, after United States, Japan and China. The agrochemicals industry is a significant industry for the Indian economy. The Indian agrochemicals market grew at a rate of 11% from USD 1.22 billion in FY08 to an estimated USD 1.36 billion in FY09. India’s agrochemicals consumption is one of the lowest in the world with per hectare consumption of just 0.58 Kg compared to US (4.5 Kg/ha) and Japan (11 Kg/ha). In India, paddy accounts for the maximum share of pesticide consumption, around 28%, followed by cotton (20%). Indian population is increasing and the per capita size of land decreasing, the use of pesticides in India has to improve further.
